You can't model in TresEd, you need 3dsMax or Gmax for that. You can improvise and use flat models and such to construct a rather bland structure...

There really can't be any tips

you need to figure that out yourself since most modelers have their own techniques.

GMax is free, and can be downloaded and registered at Turbosquid.

Easier, yes. However, without proper protection, there is ALWAYS a risk of a virus. Also, it is illegal...

We all have, one time or another, most of the normal people here have broken the law, downloading gmax off torents is easier then regitering and everything, I do it for sheer need and otherwise it would take to long, I like fast.
