The Beach Hotel Billboard Room Image Found

Post by hppav »

hppav strikes again!

Image

This is the EXACT photo used in the billboard for the hotel, they just edited the windows to remove the bars. The mountain in the background is Diamond Head, a volcano south of Waikiki Beach. The photo is of the Aston Waikiki Banyan and is still used on this site: http://royalhawaii.com/waikiki-banyan.htm

Good thing they haven't updated the website in 25+ years lol.

EDIT: Then I find one where someone already edited out the bars on the windows for some reason though it's lower resolution:

It's also worth noting that the background image for the render of the hotel model is Fort DeRussy Beach with Diamond Head also visible in the background. Have not found an exact match photo (YET!).

Woah, that is really cool.

Out of curiosity, how do you find these? In cases like this, are you using reverse image search for example? :)

Actually I searched Lanai and found a picture from Waikiki and recognized the mountain, then I went looking for hotels with black railings on the balconies and found a building with two towers named Waikiki Banyan and using the maps of the building determined it to be Tower 1 and searched for Waikiki Banyan Tower 1 Rooms on Bing image search and scrolled all the way down. It was the last image before "See more images" and I didn't realize it was the exact image until I compared it. Was just looking out the windows looking for the mountain view out the window with no towers in the foreground. I honestly wasn't expecting to find the exact image but it just kinda happened. It is probably the fastest I've found something like this  Still can't believe it, was on the inside of an hour.

LOL, nice!! While you're at it, can you look up the redhead poster that's in the tool shed in proto builds of Jungle Road? I still say it's actress Kim Myers (Nightmare on Elm Street 2). Hope you'll do more of these, the Kolibri painting in the Burroughs café also interests me to this day.

She kinda looks like Angie Everhart to me. She did a lot of magazine shoots back in the day and had been in Tales from the Crypt Presents Bordello of Blood in 1996. I haven't yet found a matching photo but I'll be looking for it lol.

Also I think the billboard is an edited version of an actual ad or brochure for the hotel but I can't find one. The amenities are the same and the InGen Hotels and Resorts looks similar to the Aston Hotels & Resorts logo from that time...

I find the window-bar-editing especially amusing, because in the JP1 novel Grant and Ellie are faced with the mystery, when they arrive, of why bars have been added to the windows that weren't in the plans the say for the lodge.

For the hotel-on-the-beach image... I see still what I saw a while back, that it looks a little as if two different hotel images have been photoshopped together. The angle difference seems like one part... as well the foliage detail next to it seems to clash a bit with other parts of the image.

Going to post this to the Discord...

Not sure how many here remember, but the dev who made it (Marta IIRC, who also did the Plantation House model) told me back then that she made that painting. She remembered it without being asked about it. It was originally made for another game, and I remember I think you Hilwo? showed another game that uses a very similar image as a cover :)

Yeah, it was Kolibri for Sega 32X. Still weird though, as the images weren't 100% the same.

Dang, that's really impressive. And under an hour!? Man that is awesome. Still find the hotel image interesting as the in game terrain isn't anything like that. Would have to check but wonder if that's what they had originally wanted the beach to look like. Anyway, great work there.

I forget what the walkthrough says. But even the super-early BE (build 55?), looking about as old as that SUM version, has a cliffline there instead of a beach.

The walkthrough is VERY vague about the area. Basically it's a sheltered lagoon with cliffs on either side to keep you from leaving. The pillars are said to be sticking up out of the sand and shallow water. So the image seems to match their initial idea. Wonder what went wrong.

Ah, so there was a beach. That sounds pretty neat. I tried to create one in BE Reloaded, I'd say it looked mostly okay. For a level called Beach, the versions we have don't have much sand on them.
