What are the options for inserting texture larger than 256x256? (512x512, 1024x1024)

The only way to have textures higher than 256x256 is to use the CE patch. It has a function to override textures and support higher resolution.
Check out the "LevelAuthorReadme.txt" file and go to "Level (SWP) Texture Overrides for Hardware Rendering" to see how it can be used. Terrain textures can not be replaced however.

If it gets overwhealming at any point I suggest trying to learn individual modding elements one at a time
