.I'm not sure it indeed is related to the number of vertices (I have imported more detailed models than that without crashing Tres), but I think it would be wise to chop up the model anyway.
1) you can do that by selecting say half of the faces and choosing "Detach" in 3dsmax/gmax
2) there's also a button on the same rollup menu that sais "Delete Isolated Vertices" or something, click that as well
3) and before you export you should center the pivot (read more in the 3dsmax/gmax help for that)
I should say that when I imported the .3ds into the testlevel 6 months ago it worked without a problem, but the import functions in GeomAdd might have changed since causing it to mess up
