The Mission

Post by Troodon »

We need a goal and a plan. Our goal is clear: develop the Trespasser Hunter Camp Mission Pack. The plan is yet to be defined. Given my experience with the JR+ level, and in computer programming (almost 20 years), I will assume the role of coordinator of this project.

All of you who are serious and determined to play a role in this project will develop skills that you may be able to leverage later on, maybe in the computer/video game industry, or elsewhere. I expect this project to take no less than six months. Please be professional and reliable. We need to interact with each other efficiently and none of us have time to waste. When this is finished everybody will give you credit for what you have achieved and you may decide to add your participation in this project to your resume.

Some of us are best at editing levels, others at creating models, others yet at writing scripts, a.s.o. I would greatly appreciate if each of you took a moment to reflect upon what you think you are best at, and what you think you can contribute to this mission pack, and then let the rest of us know what your specialization as a member of this team will be.

During the days left until the end of this year I assume we will all be quite busy so I do not expect much action here until.. 2003 :)

TresEd does not currently work on my system, so I would have to work in other areas. I could test levels and do other tasks which do not directly invlove programming and models.
This is truly one of the most disappointing moments in gaming history. Gamers are being reduced to digging through the game's installed files to discover what was supposed to happen in the game they just bought.

I have quite a lot experience about modelling, but not in max or gmax. Is it possible to model for tres with gmax?
If it is, I can model and help with other things. I also can do some scriptings, altough I´m not very experienced in it.

I can probably model anything thats not living, but I don't think we really need that for this project anyway. I'm also learning to create custom textures using Photoshop.

I also understand the story and location of the Jurassic Park trilogy (both the books and movies) to the finest detail and can use my modeling and animation skills to try and create and intro/outro animation for the mission pack.

I've asked madppiper for some web temporary space for uploads to share files, it would simplify our task to a great extend. I will soon post some terrain BMPs/pics for discussion.

Here is a draft of the steps we need to consider in developing this mission pack:

- terrain;
- storyline / elements of interest;
- models (old; new);
- puzzles;
- scripts;
- audios;
- level design (editing);
- level testing.

We will need all of the specializations you've mentioned and it's a good thing each of you can do more than one thing:

Mike -- modelling & textures, animations, storyline;
Rexy40 -- storyline, level testing, level design, public relations.
Tomi -- modelling, scripting;
the ARK -- level testing, storyline;

Mike, you are the most experienced modeller of the team. I'm not sure whether new textures can be successfully imported. Animations are definitely worth considering when we have the final storyline. I count on your knowledge of the game to make an inventory of the Hunter Camp elements already present in the retail levels so that we can decide what to include in the mission pack. All of us can help with this and I think it's one of the important things to do first.

Tomi, for the sake of efficiency and to avoid headaches it would be better to create new models only in 3DS Studio Max. We must do with what we have, if you see what I mean. If you have any concerns please PM me. You could become our scripting specialist. I suggest you start by exploring the TresCom level in TresEd to get a solid understanding of how triggers and puzzles work.

Rexy40 and the ARK, when we have chosen a terrain maybe you can create the draft of a storyline. That's a difficult task because it must meed at least three criteria:

- be simple, yet challenging;
- make sense (coherence; consistency with the JP/Tres paradigm);
- take maximum advantage of the HC elements available in the retail.

You could also be the main mission pack testers of the team, see how your vision compares to the end result.

Let me know if these tentative task assignments make sense to you, please correct me if I made a mistake. Moreover, we can change this at any time, flexibility is important.

----

Tomi, you'll be our Scripting Master then. We have to work hard to catch up with the TresCom Ops group. It is my understanding that you have a fast computer so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to explore levels in TresEd.

Rexy, I wonder if, as a Public Relations Officer, you think it would be possible for you to obtain some information from the original Tres team concerning the Hunter Camp -- what they had in mind, models and such.

Mike, maybe a ship or large boat model is available on the web, we could edit it when we have a storyline. You'll find at least two 3DS boats at http://www.3dcafe.com (and two subs, by the way). It doesn't need to be a tanker, remember the boat at the end of the JP book, where the raptors were; or the ship in the JPII movie, with the T-Rex in it.

Ok, I´ll try to improve my scripting skills. I can also render sketch pictures with POV-Ray for Mike, if needed. Since TresCom Ops created a working balloon, it is not impossible to make a boat (if we want Anne to visit on one of the smaller islands).

The idea of putting the camp near a shore sounds great to me. I like the ambiet sound of sea in trespasser.

I don't really like to download models to use (unless its urgent), but I'll save the site and look at it as a last resort if necissary.

Tomi, I'll probably need your help with the tanker a little later.. right now I'm gonna try and decide what type of boat to use. The one from TLW isn't a bad idea, especially since its shown in the movie from plenty of angles and even has some interior shots. The book is a little harder to use since it doesn't have any real reference photo, but Tomi, you could make a sketch of what you think it would've looked like, right?

Anyway, I'm gonna go look at some shots of the boat from TLW right now and see if its do-able.

Trav plans to start working on The Emergency Compound level, Mickey has just started developing The Plains, and Tomi needs to finish The Jungle. Are you guys sure you can work on two projects at the same time -- I mean your own and Hunter Camp?

Yeah. The first beta of my level is already finished. I still need to test it and check that it´s working.
