Fatal Error: Hardware or DX 11 to blame?

Post by Xenomoose »

I don't know how many times someone posts a "Fatal Error" Topic, but ever since I built my new computer I haven't been able to get Trespasser up and running. I've reinstalled using admin privileges and compatibility mode, I've tried running under admin and compatibility modes, I've patched, I've used ATX, I've done so many things that I'm convinced that the problem lies either in my hardware (maybe trespasser isn't compatible with new tech?) or DX11 (same argument as before, maybe it's not compatible with newer tech). For the tech savvy, I've included the error file below:

Code: Select all

Trespasser Build: 1, 0, 117
Trespasser Fault: Wed Jun 08 19:09:58 2011

I genuinely love this game, so any help would be hot. I will provide system specs if needed, but to make a long story short, my CPU is a Quad-Core running 3.4 GHz per core, and my GPU runs a whopping 2 gigs of V-Ram (AMD Radeon HD 6950), and I'm running Win7 64-bit.

Hmmm... I think this may have to do with the multiple cores, I think someone mentioned something about that.

Haven't tried Windows 7 64-bit, only 32-bit and Vista 64-bit, and it runs on both...

The fatal error message shows up as soon as I try to start up the game. Double-Click, Fatal Error.

it's not a Windows 7 x64 problem, I run Win7 x64 Home Edition and Trespasser runs like a dream.

And I doubt it has anything to do with DX11 unless Microsoft randomly decided to cut their backwards compatibility with older DX projects.

Process of elimination tends to yield the answer, I believe it is your new hardware and/or their drivers.

It's not DirectX if it's happening right after launching the program...

Crap. Well, I don't have anything else to run this on, as my last computer died of a catastrophic hardware failure. Literally. The hard-drive was tearing itself apart and the motherboard died.

Have you tried the demo to see if the same thing happens?

Hmmm... have you tried running the demo from a USB stick, just in case?

It's not the filesystem, then. Definitely something related to your hardware. Have you run a memory test, just in case? Try memtest86+

Yeah, that's not working for me (I can't install it properly. Another tech problem for me to overcome I guess). Besides, my computer is completely new AND built by me. I fail to see how my memory can be responsible if it's new and fresh out of the box.

I think that this problem of mine is completely unsolvable. I'd have to replace hardware or buy a new laptop or something just for the purpose of playing this game, and that's not worth it.

It appears to be the classic "Tres likes some hardware and not others for no really apparent reason", unfortunately. :( Shame, really.
Unlikely, but it might be worth trying to change the video rendering mode from hardware to software or other way (depending on what it currently is) -- yeah, I admit it's really likely not to work, but maybe worth a try. It can be changed somewhere in the files, iirc.

I couldn't find that option (I'm guessing it was in one of the config files, but the only one of those I could find was for ATX). I guess I'll just have to not play Trespasser. Maybe one day when I have to replace a crucial part of my PC it'll somehow magically make my computer able to run it, but for now, thanks for the help anyways, guys.

There's a similar topic here, for Vista:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8724

Other than installing the manufacturer's video drivers instead of the Windows-provided ones, I'm out of suggestions...
