This initial post has been completely re-written in April 2022 to make it more relevant since a lot of progress has happened since the original post.

I've been working on a remake/reimagination of Trespasser in Unity since May 2021. After a year of development, it holds 9 individual levels with most buildings ported over from TresEd, HD dinosaurs, puzzles, environments and more. Please note that this is my first attempt at creating an actual game, so it's not perfect at all, but it is an interesting project.

To play, just download the latest version, unzip it and run the "Trespasser Awakening.exe" (in older versions "Trespasser HD Remake.exe"). No other steps are necessary. The game is regularly updated and a new version is available on average all two weeks.

You can find a version of the game on the trescom.org page here https://www.trescom.org/download/trespasser-hd-remake however, I strongly suggest to check my signature for the link to the latest build. Thank you so much that really means a lot, especially because it's still so far from my actual vision and I'm hypercritical of my work :) :)

Yeah I'd be more than happy to make a vid! What kind of video/content would you look for? Just this one map (harbour/lab), or all 9 levels?
A full walkthrough or just some areas? Reveal of secrets? Comments on ideas and behind the scenes?

It doesn't have to be all that comprehensive. That would be a lot of extra work. A simple walkthrough of some key areas would be great. I guess it wouldn't hurt to learn a bit more about the scope of this project and how far you are willing to take it :D Am i correct to assume that you have working dinosaurs or did i misread your original post? Are you going to recreate the arm mechanics or are the controls more in line with traditional FPS games? I'm very eager to see how this is going to turn out and i know i will be watching this thread for new updates

Gotcha! I will create a devlog video in the next few days to present my vision and roadmap, and I'll walk through some of my favourite sections.

I can already answer some of your questions. Yes, the game already has quite a mature, although not perfected, AI enemy system, meaning you will get attacked by most dinosaurs and your can kill them. Just like in the original game, you can also use some dinosaurs to distract an attacker from you. Other dinosaurs are currently just for display but that's only due to missing animations and I have the ambition to change that. All dinosaurs come with some animations though. To make the enemy AI system work, I rely on a third party asset and unfortunately it is incredibly limited in what it can do. Thanks to scripting, I've been able to overcome some of them but I still worry about others. I'll give examples in the devlog video

The player mechanics depend entirely on a third party asset that I purchased for use in Unity. It's incredibly customisable, but it will be entirely in line with modern player mechanics and there won't be an arm like in the original game. In my remake, you can currently play in first and in third person mode, but both have problems and when you switch between them, a lot goes wrong. For example, the weapon is in the wrong place or the camera is in a weird position. Most of this really just needs fine tuning, which will happen over the next months. My hope is to keep both modes, so that you can choose yourself whether to play in first or third person. However, this depends on the creator of the player asset. I noticed that in first person, it's not possible to set a max slope limit, meaning you can almost go anywhere and skip puzzles. If this is not resolved, I might end up removing first person. On the other hand, there are areas where the third person mode is incredibly frustrating to use, for example when trying to climb the arm of the mobile cranes in the last section of the second level where you walk up the hill with the monorail tracks.

Yeah, I want to add so much more stuff to it, but I also need to walk a fine line between making sure it still looks abandoned. For now I've just added in more stuff and will continue to do so but later on I will have to make the textures even rustier and dirtier and mess up some of the stuff. Like having the Emily half way sunk and tumbling over some items and some containers. I found the perfect inspiration for my harbour on ArtStation that I want to mimic: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/XBEVKl

I think adding more stuff is fine. The devs was limited by time and hardware back in the day, otherwise they would've added more objects. To quote my signature which is from one of the design documents:

I created a new build of the game as I've made some progress and changes. You can download it from here:

Most important changes from previous release:
Level 5: The Gallimimi now run faster and can be shot and killed. They also have various different textures and there are additional Galimimi coming from behind the player when coming down the hill onto the plains. I recommend playing in 3rd person mode so that they can overtake the player, as first person mode runs too fast for them to catch up

Levels 1-7: I added a weather plugin, you now have beautiful clouds and other weather effects.

Level 4: The town level is now at night with a proper sky, moon and haziness effect. The flow of time is switched off, unless you go into Hammond's office in the upper floor of his building, whereafter night will gradually turn into morning. In a later version, I will implement the electronic card key puzzle so that the player must walk into Hammond's office in order to progress through the gates and will therefore activate the flow of time automatically

Level 3: Towards the end of the level, day will turn into evening and then into night. It currently happens a bit too fast, in a later version I will spread it out more.

Main Menu: I redesigned the main menu from scratch

Known issues:
- All raptors mistakenly have the "eat" animation assigned to their idling status, meaning when they wander around before having detected a player, they sometimes play the wrong animation.
- There's an overlap between the loading screens and the main menu when you click "Play" or load any of the levels from the main menu

Somehow I missed this one. Looks promising thusfar - I believe this is the first semi-complete remake of Trespasser we've had released! Just having AI at all is quite a milestone. Will check it out later and see how it plays. I especially like the idea of the time change element, which is something I know has been considered in similar projects. Would be cool if the lights in the Town worked as well, since they are operational in the movie.

If you're looking for more inspiration for your level, I was working on an in-engine remake of Trespasser's levels (only got as far as Beach and a bit of Jungle Road, though), which you can see here:

Hey thank you so much for your post, I really appreciate feedback and especially as you've worked on a remake before. I only just came across it the other day but haven't managed to download it just yet. I will definitely do so, the screenshots really look fantastic and full of details and vegetation.

I'm looking forward to you having a play through my remake because input from players is what makes the biggest difference and has been the major contributor to the more creative and interesting changes and areas I've built.

Your comments about the AI are so true lol it was actually the very first thing I focussed on when I started. My initial proof of concept was the AI, and if I wouldn't have been able to pull it off, I wouldn't have continued with the project. And yet ever since then I've adjusted the AI even more and I'm still learning about it.

About the lights and the town, I'm not going to spoil your experience, all I can say for now is play the game ;)

TI is right, the downfall of ports of Trespasser into other engines is very commonly the lack of AI, and/or a team member who has any idea how to do that in the chosen engine. Any amount of intact Trespasser in another engine with working dinos, is going to get somewhere.

Sorry to create 2 releases so quickly after each other, but I was really unhappy with yesterday's build. I sorted out some issues today because you deserve better. Here is the link to the latest build, which I recommend using rather than version 22m1vD (I will remove 22m1vD from the drive):

What's new in version 22m1vE:
- The level loading screens in the main menu are no longer crooked. However, it continues to rain during the display of the loading screen and I've not yet figured out how to stop it

- The raptors now no longer display the "eat" animation when idling, with the exception of the one in the canyon that is feeding on a triceratops

- In level 6 of version 22m1vD, it started to rain once you left the harbour area and walked up to the lab. Unfortunately, this destroyed two pretty cool visual player rewards; one is the view over the harbour and the other is the mountain towering over the labs in the background. Therefore, I removed the rain and will keep the weather clear throughout the level.

- Instead, I have added rain in the canyon level. I also made the transition from day to night a bit longer but I feel like I have to make it even longer than that
