Uneducated observation

As i recently mentioned, i have been skimming over different topics and trying to wrap my head around all the subjects regarding A) running the game at best possible settings and when that is achieved, B) installing the mods from this incredible team that has made all the work for this game. Due to personal obligations, at home i only managed to install the game and install CE patch, and that has already given me more than i've had since i 1st got the game, regarding visuals and resolution. PC usage is non-existant for me due to baby demanding admiration and charming her way into every waking minute when i'm not at work.

So, at work i'm browsing through different topics and wondering how much love and knowledge this community actually has for this game and all of its materials, some prominent names keep jumping out , TheIdiot, Draconisaurus, Tatu, machf... and pages and pages of exploration through levels, original, this version, that version, what is specifically in which version, where does the flower work, where it doesnt, where is the orchid, where it isnt an orchid when it IS an orchid... poligons, anchors, textures, objects... then there is lingo that needs to assimilated, references that captain america wouldnt understand, PV, JPDS, IJ... For an outsider looking in, it can be a daunting task attempting to unravel the lore through myriad of topics and just dabble in the results of development here on the forum.

As is with Hammonds memoirs that are happening simultaneously in several eras and thus being allover the time frame, so is the history of the maps and mods for the game spread out through ages. Recent boom in activity has been made with acquisition of all the materials from development, versions, scrapped maps and their integration and the joy of the members on the forum has been palpable :D

This is just my irrelevant rambling that as an outsider looking in am putting into the written word, not even an opinion but a thought, and an incoherent one that is. An observation of someone who is perplexed and entertained at the same time rummaging through ancient history trying to decipher glyphs. on the other side, there is an attempt, from someone not being paid, to people who have no right to expect any such favours, to make clearer idea how to begin with the workings and that is just glorious.

so, anyone having a comment, thought, lament, exclamation point or question mark to add?

Hehe. I think one reason why some of us are still here cause we just can't move on. It is a safe place and an anchor for us to be here. Several old key members have left just because of that - family. Their life becomes to busy. And I think in a modern world where there are so many other games, and so easy to get them now, people move on. Even if I am not in a huge modding mood right now, I am still here and thinking about Trespasser every day 8-)

We do indeed dig up glyphs. Tres is burgeoning with mysteries about Jurassic Park and other things. Having started so early and done so for so long, this does seem to be the only possible place for such doing. We do appreciate the others who come along to join us.

i have just read Drac's Tres Re-Exploration and that is just insane amount of effort to find all those ingame and in-editor differences between versions where you can see the degradation of complexity and cancellation of plans for the game. Heartbreaking stuff, come to think of it. I have read, whether on the main page or in forum that there were interviews with Seamus and/or some other dev member where all the reasons behind the game's flop have been (in hindsight) elaborated and explained and also in AVGN video, but other than that, i can't recall how did you acquire all the old versions and unreleased material and scrapped maps, who was the "leak"? Has there been any unofficial under the board communication with devs or do they in general regard this as their biggest failure and avoid it like the plague?

Tatu is TresCom's expert developer-contact. Though not all Trespasser resources came from him. One time a company CEO executive died, and his wife had the Trespasser beta. After negotiation TresCom was able to play it, and similar things have come to light since then.

Almost. A guy called Assembler bought a bunch of early versions of a lot of games from this family. That person later contacted us and shared what they had. This was Build 96, 116c (same as retail) and what appeared to be the gold disc of the released game (that says BETA 4 :P ), our first beta. There was some negotiation and we finally got it.

I've been in contact with a lot of devs through the years, starting 10 years ago in 2010. I basically started doing it to ask them for stuff, as I was worried it might get lost otherwise (and some already had). I am very happy what we manage to recover during the years - Several early alphas, original assets (with a lot of unused ones), design documents. Oh man do I wish that we get more one day!

Build 116d is the same as the retail, 116c is an earlier one where some of the additional files (DirectX, readme.txt or such, right now I can't remember which) are different...

IIRC the only difference I remember are that Register your game thing that didn't say Trespasser in 116c but did in 116d.

that the materials were somehow acquired is a little miracle in itself. there have been many hopes in the individual ai making the dinos unpredictable and also interacting with themselves instead of being maxxx aggroed towards the player, that level of ai was never developed due to time constraints or was it scrapped after a certain stage? was there any remnants of it in the previous versions or potentially in versions that were never acquired? i have't the faintest idea how you guys are actually making new levels or remaking old ones but from what i've understood, there has been in depth analysis of the code and making a patchwork of available data, or has there been actual new programming, rewriting ai and stuff.

since i've never played any custom map, how does the final result come to life? are there music triggers, voiceover triggers, borrowed from the original maps? what about dinos? how do they come to life in custom maps? and bear in mind - im not a programmer, just a meager it specialist with no code knowledge whatsoever :D
have the materials from previous versions been useful to making improvements to the original game? what is it called, the 116?

moreover, i was entertained when i saw Klayton Fioriti appearing on this site, as a JP fan i saw his videos years ago and liked what he was doing even though most of his materials were hearsay, or wishful thinkings and theories but entertaining nonetheless. So when that expert was stricken with the knowledge about this game, it made me shuckle. i've seen that he had a few posts about running the game, and i think he must have thought where has this crappy game been all my life? i still watch his movies every once in a while but he does seem to focus on stuff that is really unnoticed and not groundbreaking, like one of his recent videos about a dino who appeared in JP2 in the coralling scene like a blurry side effect and about his potential return in the Camp Cretaceous... i mean, i am ALL for trivial knowledge, escpecially about the topic that i love, but that is stretching it...

You'll get a more in-depth respons soon, I'm sure. But this is a quick reply from the top of my head.

The post-mortem of Trespasser might be a good read for you, though you'd have to look around a bit or wait for someone else to tell you where to find it.

Dino AI: I think I read that they cycled through emotions so fast, they'd just stop moving altogether. So they all had their agression set to max and I think most of the rest was disabled. There's a single raptor in Industrial Jungle that doesn't attack unless provoked.
Yes there were remnants in earlier versions. First beta that was uncovered was build 96 (retail is 116, demo is 117), which had raptors come up and sniff at you. This may have been to due to a new exe generated with the source code though, I can't be sure on that. Yes, the source code was recovered as well. I think it was 2009 or somewhere around there.

Custom maps: The stream files have music and voiceovers, used and unused. Older versions of the game even have lots more we hadn't seen/heard before. All of those can be implemented by using TresEd, a level editor last updated (I think) in 2003. That's the only program I've ever used, I know there's lots of other tools developed.
EDIT: Lots of assets have also been created from scratch. I've seen plans to record voiceovers as well at some point. But I haven't been playing custom maps in a while, so I'm not sure if that's still being done, or if it's mostly done by text triggers instead.

If you go into the first JPDS level, you can go down the mountain and turn left. A short ways ahead is a drinking velociraptor. It was a bit difficult to have it work and this is the only thing it does unless provoked.
