That's pretty obvious; what about possibilities if it was temporarily accidentally used..

So I have been playing around with the demo and my tpass.ini file from my working CE, but i get the same results when changing stuff around.
Only thing is that when i change "Registry Init=" from 1 to 0, the screen doesn't even flashes, it just gets the fatal error message immediately.

Also it was before i tried machf's ini that it started to fatal error instead of screwed up screen, think it started with that after i tried Windows + P key combo that i couldn't even get into the game with half screen.

I noted on my virtual XP that levels from vanilla Tres didn't work in Twilight, at least when i copied all files from CD-data to Twilight-data.

Here is my ini:

Huh. Well from what you just said you have Tres CE working fine? At least you can play the game still...

Yea CE works perfect, I believe i mentioned that a couple of times.

Problem is that East Dock, JPDS, Trescom OPS, The Lagoon and a lot of other great maps/mods require ATX.
And don't forget... jumping raptors!

As i also have said ATX does work on my virtual XP but i can only run it in software mode there, if i try hardware mode i get like 5-15 fps...
Most user made stuff don't look good at all in software rendering.

I see. Well, that sucks (especially no jumping raptors), but, the original game and vast-majority of modded material is still accessible through CE. So, I'd say you've got it going pretty well. :statue:

It's just so strange, I mean what would be the common issue that would crash vanilla Tres and ATX but still let CE run without a single hiccup...
Must be something with paths, dll's or that Windows consider the system interaction to be too unsafe/weird with vanila/ATX executables.

Virtual programs do not really support games overall, specially not DirectX games, that is probably the main reason why hardware mode is having issues. Not to mention that vanilla hardware has its own issues anyway with performance.
Problem is that East Dock, JPDS, Trescom OPS, The Lagoon and a lot of other great maps/mods require ATX.
You could try them in CE. Some might require some setup first. Except that some features might be missing, like rain/snow, all the mods should technically work to play through on CE.
It's just so strange, I mean what would be the common issue that would crash vanilla Tres and ATX but still let CE run without a single hiccup...
CE add modern OS support, and DirectX 9 support which helps a lot. ATX is only a patch that have hacked stuff into Trespasser and doesn't add any additional OS support, but rather add functions. ATX was created long before the source code for the game got leaked, which CE is based on, and therefore it is easier to fix various issues.

My experience with vanilla and ATX Trespasser is that it is not that stable. I remember it could work once but then after a reinstall of the OS, suddenly it had issues running, while another OS reinstall it worked again.

I know you have two monitors, but are you on a stationary PC or a laptop? And do you happen to have more than one graphics card? I know on "gaming" laptops, you usually have an integrated Intel graphic card and an external, like Nvidia. I always had to set the game manually to use the Nvidia one in order to even run it.

Well, earlier today I tried the very same demo whose .ini file I posted under 64-bit Windows 7 (previously I ran it under 32-bit Windows 7), and it ran just fine, without changing any settings.

Just in case, here it is:

Code: Select all

[Settings]
Safemode=0
DDrawCertIgnore=1
Auto Settings=1
RenderQuality=4
Width=1920
Height=1080
AutoLoad Temp=0
PlaySFX=-1
PlayAmbient=-1
PlayVoiceOver=-1
PlayMusic=0
UseSubTitles=-1
AudioEnable3D=-1
XView=0
YView=0
Gamma=9
Registry Init=1
Max Recommended Tex Dim=256
Use D3D=1
Video GUID=0000000000000000000000000000000000
D3D GUID=E03DE684AA46CF11816F0000C020156EAA
Video Driver=Controlador de pantalla primaria (display)
Z Buffer Bitdepth=32
Hardware Water=1
Page Managed=0
Triple Buffer=0
Dither=0
MasterVolume=100
Now, I read you can run Tres CE but not the retail or ATX... well, I'm only running Tres CE, as retail Trespasser can't get any resolutions higher than 800*600 without a patch (which I think has been removed from the downloads section, but it should be there if anyone wants to try it), and ATX was, well, a hack, and it had its limitations even though it added lots of new features. Next time I reboot this PC I'll try ATX... (I'm back on 32-bit now)

I moved it back so the patch is visible again. I moved it to the old Patch folder as most people wouldn't run vanilla anyway.

Well, I tested ATX (the trespassATX2DEMO.exe file, as I'm working with the demo engine) under 64-bit Windows 7, and had no problems whatsoever... here's the ATXconfig.ini file I use:

Code: Select all

; ATX Trespasser Modification Configuration File
; Last updated by: ATX 2.13
; See ATX_README.htm for details.
; Notes: comments, unused keys, and erronous values
; may be erased/replaced by ATX at all times (as maintenance).
; Do not edit while game is in progress.

Yes I'm on a stationary pc, it has both an integrated graphics card and a dedicated one (Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 OC). Currently I have my second monitor disconnected.
Can you specify how you manually select video card, is it in render menu were you choose software/hardware or is it tpass.ini lines you are referring to:
Video GUID=0000000000000000000000000000000000
D3D GUID=E03DE684AA46CF11816F0000C020156EAA
Video Driver=Primary Display Driver (display)

Didn't know that about CE-ATX, that explains a bit. Yeah i know virtual application are lacking for this kinda stuff.
I did try EastDock in CE, got everything but rain(not supported I understand) and spitting dilos to work, I think. Still it misses something :esad:
machf
I tried the demo again with the tpass.ini settings you provided (changed the necessary bits), still fatal error. Also tried trespassATX2DEMO.exe and your ATXconfig.ini but still fatal error.

I'm gonna do some backups today and then I'm gonna go poking in the Windows registry, see if I can get something to happen.

Either go into Nvidia's control panel: Right click desktop->Nvidia Control Panel->On left side, Manage 3D Settings->Program Settings->Press Add and find Trespasser's exe. Apply and try the game. Note: You might have to do this each time you do an driver update. I had, but I always used Nvidia Experience to update drivers.
Otherwise: Right click the Trespasser exe. There should be an option there to pick graphic card in a "sub" menu. So you can select either the integrated one or Nvidia. :)

If trying the demo, delete tpass.ini so the game generates a new one after this.

The former, in the menu. After that, the settings in the tpass.ini should have been updated accordingly. Since TresCE is running, use it to perform that.

Mi video card is a GT 730. It shouldn't be too different. Is the integrated video card disabled in the board's setup? I'm wondering if the Video GUID = 0 is pointing at it rather than the NVidia...
