Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
So I found the Trespasser registry, it was under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Dreamworks...
Trespasser
Isn't it usually?:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Dreamworks...
Trespasser
Anyway I deleted the whole registry after uninstalling Tres, rebooted and reinstalled.
But still the game crashes upon startup and it don't create new registry entries upon reinstall. Dreamworks registry is still blank after i deleted the contents.
Have tried win98 compatibility and have disabled AV, yet after install it crashes when i run it.
I did get vanilla Tres to work on my virtual XP machine after i did a proper hard drive install, but Twilight still crashes when i launch a level on it. I'm trying the levels from vanilla Tres.
CE still works.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
It depends. On 64-bit systems the registry works different.
Try installing with admin rights. Otherwise I might suggest that you download the demo. Move all files from the /data folder on the CD and replace everything in the /data folder on the demo. Then install ATX ontop of that. It should work.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
Tried applying admin rights on every .exe file and installed, still fatal error.
Downloaded demo, unzipped and tried to launch, fatal error.
Copied contents from CD data folder to demo data folder, tried to launch, fatal error.
Unzipped ATX patch to demo folder, tried to launch, fatal error.
Tried a old driver for my NVIDIA graphics card, that didn't work either.
Every single try i tested both normal mode and safety mode on Tres but still no go.
Is there a way to set Software/Hardware render in the .ini file?

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
First I thought maybe your card wasn't an NVidia and thus what worked for me didn't work for you, but that isn't it, then.
Have you run the video card detection?
I dislike Twilight a lot because it makes people think they can just "pop it in" and get everything running smoothly immediately. And it doesn't work like that.
Try following these steps:
1.- unzip the demo
2.- run the demo's original trespass.exe file
3.- interrupt the startup video or wait for it to finish and the main menu to appear
4.- go to options->video->select new video driver
5.- set your resolution to 800*600 as that's the maximum that's allowed by default with the original executables
6.- NOW you can add Tres CE or ATX and tweak their .ini files
7.- and also tweak the demo's tpass.ini file to adjust the screen resolution, Max Recommended Tex Dim, Z Buffer Bitdepth and other parameters
8.- after this, you can install the retail Trespasser and use Tres CE configured so that it will use a tpass.ini file instead of the registry, and just copy all the .ini files from the demo folder to the retail folder
EDIT: oh, something important here: try not to use drive C:\, as Windows 7 and later tend to not allow files to be written on that drive. If you are using it, then go to the main folder's properties (C:\demo\ or C:\Program files\Dreamworks Interactive\Trespasser\ or whichever you're using) and tweak the security" settings so that users can read, write and modify files in that folder and all of its sub-folders.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
machf i cant get to the video options as the demo crashes upon startup.
At one point i got a Windows error message: BEX, ole32.dll
But I did mange to get Twilight and ATX working in my virtual XP, i copied the demo over to it, ran it once, then i copied all files besides tpass.ini to the demo folder from Twilight folder, now it is working.
After that i tried coping the demo folder with working Twilight over to my "real" computer, fatal error again...
I wonder if it maybe is a memory leak related to Trespasser or some corrupt .dll file somewhere.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
Oh hello fellow Swede!
Could you give this a try? I made this .reg file to delete Trespasser registry back when we got some early builds cause uninstalling them didn't delete the registry files properly.
After that, reboot and reinstall the game (outside of Program Folder). Grab this: https://www.trescom.org/download/downlo ... ithExes.7z which contain the full ATX package. Place them in your installed folder and give it a try.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
This reminds me of when 3DS Max stopped recognizing the license on my computer even when I re-went through the process that had previously worked. Hmmm I still think that issue was caused by data-writing-rights crap, as I think machf mentioned somewhere (with not installing the game on C: drive). Are you able to make a new partition on your HDD and install the game there..?

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
Don't know if it could be considered the same as creating a new partition, but i tried installing it on a flash drive.
Copied my tres cd to the flash drive, ran setup95, launched the game and fatal error.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
I just test installed the game on mywin10 laptop (I never play games on this thing). 3 things that I had to do to get the game to run; xp compatibility mode, run as administrator and change the read/write permissions of the folder where the executable is. I noticed the later as a problem when I noticed the beach's swp file wasn't being produced. After changing permissions the game worked, (ie. level loaded & the swp file was created).
I don't know, maybe what I had to do would help you.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
I just tried the demo but still got the fatal error.
Do you guys know if anyone ever had a problem with Windows DEP when trying to run Trespasser?
I have tried that as well Rebel but it didn't help.Rebel wrote:xp compatibility mode, run as administrator and change the read/write permissions of the folder where the executable is.

Re: Trespasser Twilight/ATX screen issue
So I'm pretty determined to help you get this to work. Going back through the thread I see that you were able to actually load Trespasser without an immediate crash, before testing out machf's tpass.ini settings.
I think we should focus on this.
Is it possible to "permanently" change settings outside the tpass.ini file by having the game attempt to load them one time from the file? Perhaps some key system area is behaving differently now in a way which re-installation does not help. As it happens we have machf's INI file to inspect..

Keep in mind that these three lines should be different according to your own hardware:
Code: Select all

D3D GUID=E03DE684AA46CF11816F0000C020156EAA
