Something interesting about the Rex skin
So, just to be clear I'm going to talk about material within the source code. If that's rule breaking, my mistake. But I found something, I think if you haven't already discovered, might be of interest.
I believe the Retail Rex assets are stripped detail from a previously higher res version of itself using the final male rex maquette as a source. Now this isn't news, we know that the old "green rex" used the maquette as a skin. But this isn't necessarily the Green Rex, but it is I think evidence of a different model. Within the source you can find the head of both the old raptor model and a low res photograph of the final maquette of the Rex in The Lost World.
Here. And for comparison, the same perspective from the maquette seen on the old Lost World DVD.
It's obviously the same maquette they either had their hands on or were sent photographs of. Now this is entirely speculative and might be wrong, but what immediately grabbed me was how low quality of a skin that would be, if it just used that tiny bmp, even the final had more detail, and we know the "Green Rex" had more detail.
Here's a picture of the retail rex head map, (I'm sure you've seen already I'm just using it as a point of comparison here.)
So I had an idea. I went to GIMP, got the retail 'head' of 'AGrnTrex', cut/pasted in that tiny photo of the maquette, lowered the opacity, rotated it a bit,
And what do you know.
Not only does it fit perfectly (at least it appears it does to me), it compliments it with added detail. This leaves me to believe that the model we got was at one point part of the detail of a previous model, or a less detailed version was stripped from this detailed transitory version. What do you think? It seems pretty damn close to me. Has anyone else picked this up? Am I late? Could it just be a massive coincidence?

Sorry to double post.
But, well, would you look at that. This isn't coincidence after all.
Edit Again: If you don't mind me triple posting, I'm going to show you the ingame results.

At the risk of being given a stern warning about posting etiquette, here's my third contribution. The ingame results.
What's that I see in the distance?
Is it?
Could it be?

Are you taking the absolute piss?
Is that actually the invisible monster?
If it is, WOW sir! Very cool find.

Good observation there! the skin of the retail rex was probably modified via color alterations and such to differentiate it a bit from the one in the movie to avoid copyright issues (that's what we think was the issue). Other than that it's based on that same image of tlw t-rex maquette. As you've been able to fit it on the retail head texture, it might even suggest they used the same image to model the rex as well.

Excellent work, man. It looks like it could actually be part of the game. This is some very interesting stuff - I can't help but feel a little bit concerned about the Trespasser developer's morals...it seems that they took a lot of their textures and skin patterns from outside and unlicensed sources, and tweaked them enough to make them indistinguishable. I'd like to see this face texture applied to the green T. rex skin in the "downloads" section of the main site - then we'd have a full beta T. rex, pretty much!

I doubt it. Though the picture you supplied is of the maquette itself, which had been used in marketing of TLW. I tried to replicate the color, of the image in that folder, and it does seem a lighter shade through manipulation, I couldn't achieve the results with official photograph of that maquette. Unless someone can point to a direction where that much detail is shown that close, I believe they were sent material by photograph or material itself; and they changed the color of it possibly.Hilwo wrote:Lol, so at first they just ripped it from this image?
