I found the original patterns for Trespasser carnivores

Post by Velociraptor Alfa »

I found this by accident while I was looking for some paleoart. The author of these illustrations is Steve Kirk and they were made around 1995.

I think the cover alone shows that is far too much of a similarity for it to be a coincidence! Amazing find!

 Tres was made back in the day when video game artists weren't that great at being artists and thus took a lot of shortcuts and borrowed a lot of art from other places. Here's a site that lists a few other examples (though they can be quite dubious, there are a few really blatant ones):

Sweet! Do you suppose Steve Kirk knows about his patterns being used in Trespasser?
Not sure if they needed to ask for permission back then?

Trespasser, y u have so many secrets?

Nice find. If I didn't know the book predated the game, I'd say that was some excellent fan art.

I'm not going to lie the patterns for the dinos in Tres was a really big thing for me as a child, they're somehow tied up with my emotions especially the red raptor type. The progression
from the orange to the red types in (I think the third level) was a big thing to me, so seeing this now is just absolutely amazing! That cover! THAT COVER! Amazing amazing find, thanks so much!

You're welcome. If only there was a better pic of that T-rex. :( I wonder on what base the rest of the dinosaurs were designed. The Tribe A Raptor and the male Triceratops were probably made based on the animatronics from TLW. The Brachiosaur was most likely made based on the concept from JP 1. But the Parasaurolophus and the Stegosaurus remains mystery... for now.

Haha, might be a bad idea. The artist may not be aware that their designs were used in Trespasser; don't want to get the devs in trouble after all this time. :yum:
