yochenhsieh, I have an idea...

Post by Dapper Dan »

...maybe a far fetched idea, but it may be worth exploring!

Since you all have created your own live distro, and you say Trespasser works under regular wine, maybe you could contact Dreramworks/EA and ask permission to include Trespasser as one of the games in the release?
If the game itself is too large, then maybe they would allow you to include the demo. The worst they can do is say "no."

Excellent idea Dan! We could try and get some interst in Tres going again.

Maybe they will give us the source too (say, what ever went down with that letter?)

Possible, I can try if Trespasser could work in a LiveCD...
Could you help contact Dreamworks/EA for permission?

How about TC-Isle? Did TresOps get the permission for
modifying and redistribution of the demo from DWI/EA?
If so, I can just include TC-Isle in my LiveCD without
bothering them.
(Do I still need the regchecker to get password?)

btw, you owe me a review(of my LiveCD), Dan!

I was thinking they'd likely give you permission quicker than they would me since this is a Chinese distro.

I can't speak for the team, but I'd wager any player would have to have the regchecker for password.

I downloaded it yesterday, burned it and booted it. I tried to go to KDE first and it crashed. I then tried IceWM which came up nicely. I couldn't figure out how to make it in English because the menu items are in Chinese so I was just guessing. I made it into the Mandrake Control Center, but couldn't figure it out after that. Give me an easy, "How To" run in English and I'll give it another go. The splash screen looks good, and the interface is clean. I'll be able to tell you more after I get it operational in English.

Because Chinese? Why?

I just found the "Enhanced demo":
http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~trescom/ind ... opatch.htm
It doesn't need any password. Is it identical to the TC-Isle?

When you see the kdm login screen, switch to console(Ctrl+Alt+F1),
login as root, then run "localedrake". You can now select language and
location, then run "cp /etc/sysconfig/i18n /home/guest/.i18n",
switch to X (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and login icewm as guest.
If part of the menu is not in English, use "restart icewm".
Now you should be in English :) .

The Enhanced Demo is tc isle, but it'll shut off after thirty minutes of play.

Why would someone from South Carolina be inquiring about wanting to include Trespasser in a Chinese language distro?! That might send up a red flag in their minds that my actual reasons for asking are not altogether honest. Since it's your distro, I doubt they'd have similar suspicions if you asked them.

TC Isle is quite different. Maybe Rebel or MP can answer whether or not it would be legal or permissible to include it in your distro.
When you see the kdm login screen...[snip]
Will do... :)

Nothing that we do is really legal, per say, Dan. But what we do do (hahaha, I said, doodoo) is attempt to limit our labors to only those who own trespasser retail.

As far as the tc_isle demo version, that's really stretching the limits of trescom's stated policy, but limiting its use to 30 minutes of timed play seems sufficient enough to protect the game and its assets as much as possible while still allowing other non-tres owners to experience tres demo with an update.
