Running Slow.. :(

Post by Dapper Dan »

This has happended to me before, and it always somehow corrected itself, but this time I'm at a loss to figure it out. Have y'all ever had your system to start running very slow for no apparent reason? Usually this machine is blindingly fast, but now Galeon, Krusader, Abiword and especially Evolution take forever to load!! I've tried shutting down many of the programs that automatically start at boot, but that hasn't helped any. The problems began right after I took a look at one of the Morphix cd distros on this machine. When I booted down and tried to boot back up, I just got a black screen. I powered down and unplugged for over 30 seconds and rebooted. She booted up to IceWM alright, but I've had this slowness problem ever since! I've Googled this, but can't seem to find anything related. Any ideas? :(

Running "top" I think I've got it narrowed down to "named" and "sshd". I hope it's not sshd..

There were 5 instances of named running! I shut it off and not only did the slowness go away, all apps actually load MUCH faster than they ever did!! :D

Still would like ya'll's input on whether or not I need it.

You don't need it. So just make sure it doesn't start automatically, see the Services configuration utility.
