Anne voiceovers

Post by machf »

OK, guys, since tatu isn't around, I guess I'll post this instead of him, then.

This is the list of voiceovers Minnie Driver recorded for Anne and how they were intended to be used within the game:
Part I: Scripted speech

Speech cued at specific points in the game, forming a rough progression that players follow as they explore the island.

Anne awakens on the beach, a quiet, peaceful lagoon with white sand, clear water, palm trees. She is safe here, and the player has an opportunity to stroll around and explore.

Anne001: Wakes up

Code: Select all

Anne001a
Oh god.
(starts to get her bearings)
This can't be happening.
Anne001a
We hit the water like…
(suddenly, she remembers the pilot. Calls out)
Anne001b
Marquez?
(again, more frightened)
Marquez!?
(no answer; quieter)
Anne001b
Where am I?

Anne002: A short while later, at the ocean

Code: Select all

Anne002a
It is beautiful here. Must be one of the offshore islands. Cocos, one of the Cinco Muertes maybe.

Anne003: Close to concrete blocks

Code: Select all

Something man-made used to be here.

Anne004: On top of a block

Code: Select all

Anne004a
A foundation, maybe.

Anne005: Scared, but a little calmer.
(a scared sort of joke: she pretends to be making a mental note)

Code: Select all

Anne005a
Dear Diary.
Plane has crashed on deserted island. Will die a lonely death.
(signing off)
Well, gotta go,
Anne

Anne006: Anne sees InGen sign

Code: Select all

Anne006a
InGen. Some kind of – wait. International Genetic Technologies.

Anne007: Going over the facts for herself

Code: Select all

Anne007a
That was the company from the Dinosaur Trial. After the trial that old guy, John Hammond wrote a book. He said it was somewhere in Central America...

Anne008: Putting it together

Code: Select all

Anne008b
Oh no. Oh god.
This is Site B. This is John Hammond's lost world.

Anne009: Shortly after.

Code: Select all

Anne009a

I knew all along this was a stupid idea.

Anne010:

Code: Select all

Anne010b
There must have been something in the memoir.

HAMMOND
My name is John Parker Hammond. I was born on March 14, 1928.

Anne011:

Code: Select all

Anne011a
Hammond. Right.
HAMMOND
What follows is a record of certain events in which I took part, between the years 1980 and 1997, on an island I will call Site B.

Anne012:

Code: Select all

Anne012b
Oh god… something like 30 people died here. Professional hunter types, mercenaries.
HAMMOND
Site B was not to be a theme park, but a research station. This was where we did the real work.

Anne013: Leaving the beach
(nervously)

Code: Select all

Anne013b
Maybe…maybe if there's a phone line, or a radio…
Anne014: Passes "No Trespassing" sign,

Code: Select all

Anne014a
(reads)

"No Trespassing." Thanks.

Anne015: Entering the jungle

Code: Select all

Anne015a
Oh god. Someone's gotta come get me.
Anne016: On one of the platforms.

Code: Select all

Anne016a. Note: was this sample cut off a bit early?
Welcome to the City of Tomorrow.
HAMMOND
I can picture them moving cautiously through the dusty rooms in bulky biohazard gear, clutching rifles, poring over our records, reading our files.

Anne017: At a sign reading, "Welcome to Site B"
(fascinated)

Code: Select all

Anne017b
This was the place. This used to be just an urban myth.
HAMMOND
The technology, the real trick of it, is still in there. In a darkened room, in an empty building with a dirty floor, it waits. The flashpoint, the origin of Jurassic park.

Anne018: Tries the gate out of station

Code: Select all

Anne018b
Who do they think they're keeping out?

Anne019: Opens gate

Code: Select all

Anne019b
I wonder what they left here.
HAMMOND
The mysterious John Hammond - shady investor, multimillionaire, jovial mad scientist.

Try "weird psycho old guy."

Anne021: As Hammond tells the story of Jurassic Park's founding

I was a freshman when they had the first rumors. We watched it on the TV news in the common room, drinking hot cocoa from the kitchen. I said it would be nothing -- just another cold fusion.

Code: Select all

Anne024: In construction shack

Shut up!

Anne028: If Anne clubs the phone from its mounting

Anne028a

Anne029: Anne making her way into the jungle

Code: Select all

HAMMOND
A forest this wild, this unknown, has not been seen by any human since the great hunters of the early Pliocene.

Anne035: In the jungle, following Hammond line.

Code: Select all

Anne035b

He's right. This is what they must have faced. Endless wilderness. Total mystery.

Anne036: Early on, splashes into stream

Code: Select all

Anne036b

Ah! This sucks!

Anne037: at posted map

Code: Select all

Anne037a

Anne038: Shortly after seeing the map

Code: Select all

Sun's in the west. I think. Which means that mountain I saw from the beach must be north.

Anne045: Close to a triceratops

Code: Select all

Anne045b

Tri-triceratops, right?
(a moment)
They don't know their names.
HAMMOND
A lost world is a sort of scientific myth. An evolutionary scenario in which an ecosystem is isolated and preserved. The rest of the world changes, leaving a tiny, fragile pocket where ancient species survive.

Anne046: After Hammond's "Lost World" speech

Re: Anne voiceovers

Post by machf »

And here's more:
Part II: Appendix – Dynamically played speech and sounds

Some of Anne's speech isn't assigned to a precise point in the game. Instead, they are cued off of events as they happen – if Anne falls, or shoots a dinosaurs, etc. these will give Anne a more human feel, a sense that she is alive and responds to events.

Ammo count numerals. As Anne empties a clip, at certain intervals (20, 15, 5) she will quickly state the number of bullets remaining, so for variety we need at least three readings of each numeral. These need a quick, tense, matter-of-fact delivery.
She will be (slightly) more stressed when she is down to her last few shots.

Combat noises/comments

We want our combats to seem real: scary, intense, and violent. Most of the noise is nonverbal – Anne reacting to pain, Anne psyching herself up to be brave, and Anne shouting in triumph, and when she does speak, she is usually very serious.

Pain noises: Hit or bitten by dinosaur, or struck by moving object –
grunt or gasp of pain. We will need a lot of these to avoid sounding repetitive. Anne can take a hit silently, but it will be good to have her making noise, if only for player feedback.

These are very physical noises, almost forced out her – you should be able to hear the hit in it.

We will probably just need to improvise in-studio to get this right.
The explanations below are some ideas to work from – we'll try a couple of versions of each.

Light hits

Light cut to limb – think of a raptor slashing a leg or arm, deep enough to draw blood, but not life-threatening -- a sudden sharp pain.

Code: Select all

AnneLightHit001: (A gasp of pain)
Ah!
AnneLightHit002: (That sudden inhalation people do when in pain.)
AnneLightHit003:
Ow!
AnneLightHit004: (A kind of growl – in pain, so adrenaline-pumped that it's just making her mad.)

AnneLightHit005: (Pure surprise. Suddenly this thing's got its claw on her.)
Hup!

Glancing blow to body or limb – struck by a swinging tail, or body-checked. Hard enough to hurt, like a punch, but not deadly.

Code: Select all

AnneLightHit006: (A plain grunt of impact)
Uh!
AnneLightHit007: (trying to shake the hurt off)
Huh!
AnneLightHit008: (Being knocked suddenly off balance – like being hit on the back of the knees.)
Wup!
AnneLightHit009: (Being knocked heavily backwards.)
Oof!

Later, as she gets more confident, she adds more verbal responses

Code: Select all

AnneLightHit010: (Said in surprise and pain.)
Damnit!
AnneLightHit011: (More composed)
Faster than I thought.
AnneLightHit012: (Goading herself)

Code: Select all

AnneLightHit021:

Heavy hits

A really bad slash to an arm or leg – really opens her up, blood flows, a gasp, a feeling of shock.

Code: Select all

AnneHeavyHit001:	(hurts a lot, but trying not to make any noise)
Nn!

Aaahh!
AnneHeavyHit004: Scared – she is seeing her own blood here.
Omigod.
AnneHeavyHit005: Something between a growl and a scream – she is really scared, but determined not to lose it.
AnneHeavyHit006: Pure rage.
Aaaah!!

A very solid hit to the body, possibly knocks her down.
