Trespasser Music Composer Bill Brown Q&A

Post by LtSten »

Trespasser Community -

Following the recent "reveal" about the soundtrack composition "Race to the Summit" (link), I decided to contact Bill Brown (who composed the music score for Trespasser) again regarding a possible Question(s) & Answer(s) session with the users here at TresCom. Happily, he's accepted this offer.

So, post below in this thread your questions for Bill Brown, and I'll send them off to him (likely some time around new year), for him to answer "when convenient" (which, judging by his online time, is quite often :P).

I checked with Tatu beforehand - apparently not.

I always wondered why he didn't use any of the themes from Jurassic Park or The Lost World, if it was because of copyright issues or if he was asked to start from scratch.

Can you ask him what he used as inspiration for the music of this? Whether is be specific songs or imagery or something else?

How does he feel about the general opinion that the music (as well as the sound in general, but mostly the music) is considered to be the best feature of the game?

How much contact did he have with the team? Spielberg? Or was it just the project lead?

What was the process that the music was put together?

Why wasn't he asked to do JP3's score?

Seriously though, I can't think of a specific thing I'd like to ask. But I'm looking forward
to reading the Q&A anyway, as I'm sure it will be an interesting read :)

Ron Moore says on his site that he rendered some scenes in order to be used as reference for composing the music...

Ask him about that.

Were you pleased with the final product?

What influence do you think Trespasser had on your other music compositions?

What led you to write the music for Trespasser?

Do you remember the name of the music library you used to draw on for some of Trespasser's themes? Is it possible to hear that library today?

The soundtrack you made for Timeline is as good or better than Trespasser's - I would say good enough that many people would listen to it today if the game itself were more remembered. Do you remember what inspiration was used for composing it? What are your thoughts about it after all this time?

How did you go about composing the music? Software, real orchestra...i.e. what tools?

I work with loops and virtual instruments and software programs so knowing this is some interest to me

Another one: Why does the music doesn't exactly follow what's going on? I mean, in most games, a loop of music will play according to the situation. For example, if there's a danger situation, a loop of danger-action music will play, but here, if there's a track like that, it just ends randomly and maybe the danger situation its still going on. You know what I mean? Maybe you could re-arrange the question in a better way.
