Anyone here with experience have any advice or recommendations on the best way to get starting using a Linux system? Particular distributions or anything like that?

Get Kubuntu that's Ubuntu but with KDE as main Desktop Environment. KDE is rather close to windows so good for newcomers. You might wait though 8 days as then the new 10.10 version of Kubuntu will be released. Otherwise you just can full-upgrade once it is out if you want to install 10.04 right now. Update is anyways easy and done automatically as soon as an Online connection is found (you can choose though if it's auto or not).
