OK. I think this should put you out of X. As root go:

telinit 3 [enter]

And see if that changes you into runlevel 3 (No X)

Then, proceed to the Nvidia "run" instsallation.

well it didnt work however i did get


apt-get remove gdm to work after words i have to reinstall it...


BUT!!!!! da da da da!


i dont have my kernel source for the nvidia install to make some othere file for it to use ... this just aint work for me....

did you ever have this much trouble?

All the time. Remember what I said about it being rough at first? There may be a way to install the nvidia drivers via apt. I'm not near my wife's laptop, but you could try "nvidia" in Synaptic and see what comes up..

I know this is hard for you now, and there was a time when it was hard for me. It just takes knowing how to figure it out. The more you deal with Linux the easier it becomes. You have to go through this "trial by fire" to get to the promised land! :wink:

holy crap!:o no way im going to try to install that.. there are so many dependances and conflicts. i guess i really dont need the nvidia drivers...

What are you talking about? With apt? It will solve all those dependancy problems for you, just click install!

Same difference. Apt is just the "front end" for apt-get. You can also do it from the command line. Just go as root:

apt-get install nvidia
